A sweet and tangy tomato-based sauce, there are as many recipes for Sloppy Joe’s as there are cooks. How much sweet and how much tangy is up to for debate. What isn’t debated are the basic ingredients; ground beef, tomato-based sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire Sauce and brown sugar.
Sloppy Joe’s – Traditional
Always served with buns (CHO in addition to Sloppy Joe’s) and the rest is up to you: fries, green salad, coleslaw, pickles, melted cheese, potato chips, veggie tray…………………………
Ingredients
- 1 TBSP olive oil
- 1 lb. (454 gr) hamburger
- ¼ cup (30 gr) red onion, finely diced 2.5 CHO
- ¼ cup (43 gr) jalapeno, finely diced 2 CHO
- ¼ cup (30 gr) red/yellow pepper, diced 1.5 CHO
- 1.5 cup (348 gr) Gigi Passata (3 CHO/1/2 cup/125 ml) 9 CHO
- 1 TBSP Tomato paste (2 CHO/TBSP) 2 CHO
- 1 TBSP (16 gr) prepared yellow mustard 0 CHO
- 2 TBSP (35 gr) Ketchup (5 CHO/TBSP) 10 CHO
- ½ TBSP (6 gr) Splenda Brown sugar Mix (2 CHO/1/2 tsp.) 6 CHO
- ½ TBSP GF Worcestershire Sauce (1 CHO/tsp.) 1.5 CHO
- ½ tsp. salt 0 CHO
- ¼ tsp. pepper 0 CHO
- ½ tsp. celery salt 0 CHO
- 1 tsp. cider vinegar 0 CHO
- ½ TBSP chili powder 0 CHO
- *hot sauce to garnish 0 CHO
- *Hamburger buns – CHO dependent on your product
TOTAL CHO 33.5 CHO
- TOTAL WEIGHT 698 GRAMS
- 33.5 CHO DIVIDED BY 698 GRAMS = .047 CHO/GRAM
- 1 TBSP = 16 GRAMS .047 CHO x 16 GRAMS .75 CHO/TBSP
- ¼ CUP = 4 TBSP .75 CHO x 4 3 CHO/1/4 CUP
- ¼ CUP = 54 GRAMS
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a skillet and add hamburger, along with salt and pepper.
- Scramble fry the hamburger and drain once cooked through.
- Return hamburger to skillet. Add onion, jalapeno, red pepper, chili powder and celery salt. Cook over medium heat for 3 – 4 minutes.
- Next add tomato paste, Passata, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire Sauce, Splenda Brown Sugar Blend and cider vinegar. Stir to incorporate.
- Cook covered over medium/low heat for about 25 minutes stirring occasionally. Sloppy Joe’s will be thick and ready for the bun!
- Serve with any sides of your choice and additional hot sauce if desired.
